It had been an unnatural day. Not only long, but trying in every sense of the word. Marguerite managed to find an empty bench and thought it as good as any for a little rest. She had no place of her own to go to, and no doubt in her mind Percy would turn her away. After moving about to get comfortable she finally managed to lay her head on her puff of skirts. The un-abiding light, however, seemed to make dozing off for a short while an unbelievably difficult task to do. Finally able to set her fan up enough to block some light, she found herself dozing off.

He grinned and got to his feet, straightening his jacket a little, "In which case, madame, should we go and explore? I'm very sure there's a few places you can stay." He hoped. His memory for who lived where was not particularly good, and that was just for the people he'd only just met.

He headed in the direction of Main Street, enthused by having someone who got on with him here at last, and a beautiful woman too. Making sure she was still with him, he momentarily tripped over the edge of some paving, but kept his balance, "Can I ask, if you're comfortable answering, that is, for your thoughts of the revolution? I will try not to judge you by a historical standard, I promise." He was curious, he had to admit.

He smiled at her when she caught his arm, but quickly turned to her answer to the question. Well, she was more Republican than he had originally thought, which he definately appreciated. He had been worried she might think him awful for the way he thought about it, as part of his history.

"I see. Firstly, thank you for actually talking about it. I...I would hasten to talk about my time, and my role in it, so easily." Probably because he screwed it up royally in places. "And...I, well, all I can ask you now, I suppose, is where you fit into the whole...period. If you don't mind, I'm just curious, as it is not often one gets a first hand account of these things." He pauses and looks up, "I think, the next place on this side is empty."

"You are free to speak your mind, madame. Especially here." He nodded quietly, actually paying attention, "I had guessed 92 or 93, to be honest. And...the Scarlet Pimpernel." That, like her husband's name, rang a bell in his head. One from years ago, in Paris, carefully making notes on things like historical perspectives through literature... Oh, yes, it was an awful piece of literature which pandered to the aristocracy. But that wasn't real. Maybe it was legendary, or something similar.

He realised he'd been lost slightly in his own thought and confusion, "It must be rather difficult for one man to ruin so many people's will." He was trying to be diplomatic, whilst he was trying to figure this out, "I can tell you, though, it is the French people that guillotine Robespierre and put an end to it."

"Anyway, we should have a look, yes." He turned into what he had correctly assumed was an empty shop, "We should find a way upstairs, somewhere."

He was about to say something intelligent when she kissed him on the cheek, which paralysed him into grinning sheepishly for a second, "I've never known someone be so pleased for someone's death," it was said with good nature, as there were probably a few people in his world who's death would be met similarly. "Although zeal is always a dangerous thing, that is for sure. And I don't think many in France try to excuse the worst of the Terror."

"Possibly. And not really, there's just a lot more buildings than there are people, I suppose." He tried the door, and finding it open, held it for her.

"History is full of people that get tastes of their own medicine, and mostly deservedly so." Following her up the stairs, keeping his eyes fixed on the step in front, out of politeness, "You don't have to stay here, either, I'm sure there are other places avaliable, this was just the first one I came across. Not bad, though, about the same size as mine."

"More modern than what I'm used to, I must admit. It's more a case of what you can come across." He shrugged, as it wasn't a big issue to him, he knew full well he would have been sleeping in a car if he wasn't a member of the government back home.

Beaufort noticed her sigh and thought he should say something, "You don't have to attempt to be positive, this really does...it's awful, sometimes. My country's being occupied and I'm not there. Which is...a relief, but it's powerless. You're allowed to be angry or upset about it, we're not British." He smirked, attempting to lighten the mood, as just because he was good at adapting to being thrown in at the deep end didn't mean he had to like it.

"Entirely understandable. I have done much the same thing, it's a good trait for a politician, putting on a face." Despite all his worries and concerns about the park, he was treating it like a break from the stresses of war.

"The North is occupied, to Orleans, when I left. By the Germans. Again." He sighed and cast his gaze elsewhere, hating having to tell her that.

Beaufort winces, and still cannot bring himself to look up, "In 1870, in 1914. They never got this far before, though. It is...tragic that this should happen three times in 70 years." This was the only time he was truly ashamed of, though, because there was nothing they could do this time to stop it. There were things he should have done to make things less chaotic, too, but there was too little preparation all around. At least in 1870 they negotiated a reasonable peace, the Germans came and went away again, and in 1914, they had the capability to stand and fight.

Beaufort did little more than raise an eyebrow at the use of such a term, as it was hardly swearing in his time. "Not at all. You at least showed more concern than your husband did," which came out as a much more bitter comment than he had intended, "Apologies."

"No, no, it was out of order for me to say that. He's just...very British." And an idiot, and entirely not worth your company. He bit the side of his mouth to stop him adding that, "I am sure they are, you would know him far better than I, and I shouldn't have commented."

He laughed uncertainly, not particuarly wantng to talk about her husband at all, "I am entirely sure he is. I'm sure he has plenty of good points in there somewhere." Again, too bitter, Jean-Etienne.
