[Evening, a little after sundown. "Redwing" by Hem comes up on the speakers.]
Hi everyone. Cayce Pollard here for a spur-of-the-moment radio show. I'll be cueing up a few songs, and if you want to hear something, call me up and let me know.
[Anyone who knows Cayce well and has spoken to her within the last couple of months may notice that she sounds genuinely happy for the first time in a long while, her cheerfulness unforced.]
I'm thinking we need some dance music, but since there's not currently a dance party on the books, I'll just play the music and wherever you are, get down with your bad self. [Pause. Snicker.] Did I just say that?
So let's get started with some old-school rocking-out glam stuff. Here's "Jeepster" by T. Rex.
And ... hey, this is me, you knew this was coming, right? Some David Bowie, of course. This is "Jean Genie".
It's not a dance party without ABBA, right? One of my friends once told me that all you need for a party is ABBA and Queen. In deference of the sensibilities of a friend, there will be no Queen, but here's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)".
Just for fun, here's Adam Ant's "Stand and Deliver".
Hm. I seem to be creeping forward in time more or less chronologically here. Not intentional, but what the hell. Let's leave the 1980s and jump forward to the 1990s with the Pet Shop Boys' "Paninaro '95". Which is notable for being the only PSB song with silent partner Chris Lowe on lead vocals.
Onward. Here's "The School Song" by Black Box Recorder. If any of you went to a British public school ... sorry. I'm sure that brings back the memories.
Let's have some more glam-tastic-ness. Here's "Beautiful" by Goldfrapp. You know, I swear, one of these days I am going to figure out how some of this music that post-dates me has made it onto my laptop. Part of it, I know, is people's iPods, but ... anyway. Not that I mind. It's nice to know that music didn't die after 2004, despite some people's suggestions that it was on its way out.
Which makes me think of ... ah, here we go: the Scissor Sisters' "Music is the Victim".
So one more dance number before I close out the set: "You Know Me Better" by Roísín Murphy. For everyone who's here with an old friend, or who misses an old friend.
So that's all I had lined up. You want to hear something, call me up on extension 420 from any park land-line. If you haven't found one yet, check the shops and back rooms. And remember: piss off the DJ and you get to hear Blur's "Song #2"*.
[And of course, Cayce cues up what's rapidly becoming her signature song: David Bowie's "Life on Mars".]
*((Also known as "that really annoying 'Woo-hoo!' song". Features prominently in Torchwood 2.01., "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang".))
((ETA: Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of Pulp, in case anyone is wondering what he looks like. Cayce may have gotten stuck on the rail-thinness and the suit, but Ten does look like he should be the lead singer in a Britpop band.))
