open RP: The Time Lords' Christmas Gift to the Park

One evening, shortly after sunset the TARDIS materialized suddenly beside the statue of Walt Disney in the center of the park. A moment later a tousled head popped out and glanced around in all directions. Then it disappeared back behind the blue wooden doors, although one remained slightly open. There was no one around to hear the voices within drifting out into the warm yet snowy darkness.

“Alright, ‘s all clear. Can you just get that side?”

“He's made for manual labour, let him do the dragging. My back can do without it, thanks.”

“Thbbbt bwip bwoop!”

“Oh. That's… just wrong. Someone get the other end.”

“You know, one more word out of you and I will splice your central processor and use it to make a microwave.”

“Ah, could you two stop arguing and give us a hand? Preferably before someone comes and the whole thing is ruined?”

“We'll continue this later.”

“Fiwip!”

“Oi! This is heavy!”

“Brip bridle eddle woo.”

A moment later the Doctor emerged from the TARDIS, carrying one end of a long box which looked to be made of various pieces of scrounged metal, wire, and what could possibly be various alien computer chips. It had panels and knobs and buttons on it, and its purpose was anyone’s guess. He maneuvered it carefully out the door, and Artoo emerged supporting the other end, followed by the Master holding a black dome-shaped object about the size of a large salad bowl in his hands.

It took about half an hour, as near as Time could actually be measured, to set up the five foot tall box, topped with the Master’s ‘salad bowl’ and arrange the surrounding panels. When everything was ready the Doctor cast a look in the Master’s direction, one hand on a switch. The Master put his own hand on a small button on the other side of the box.

A flick of the switch and the machine came to life with a pleasant hum. Something flickered in the darkness above their heads. Then the Master pressed the button, and the once empty sky was filled with the stars and constellations that belonged over Anaheim California on the 25th of December in the 21st century.

The Master folded his arms across his chest. He nodded once.

The Doctor nodded back, one hand drifting up to tug at his ear. Then he tilted his face towards the sky, and they watched the heavens in silence as the snow fell.

((Feel free to marvel from afar, thread amongst yourselves, come up and bug the Time Lords, or whatever! We might take a little bit getting back to you, as Master-mun may not have interwebs much in the next few days, but we will.

"The sky is full of diamonds!"

Sunshine went out that evening to catch a breath of air, and almost didn't notice the change in the sky at first. Her little street in New Orleans Square was narrow and well-lit; it was only by chance, and while she was about halfway through her cup of tea that she happened to look up, and at first she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her.

Break forgotten after a couple of incredulous blinks, she drifted out unthinkingly towards a more open area where she could try to seek out familiar constellations. (She wasn't being especially careful about looking where she went.) It couldn't be real, even if it was just another one of the park's tricks, but nonetheless as she craned her head back and watched the steam from her cup rising up into the newly brilliant heavens, her eyes stung a little with held-back tears.

Sam hadn’t had insomnia this bad since Jess’s death. He couldn’t remember the last time he got a full night’s sleep, and had taken to wandering the park at night once Dean was asleep (his brother probably noticed that he never stayed in his makeshift bed all night, but Sam hoped maybe he could be discreet enough) When stars suddenly appeared in the empty sky above his head he stopped mid-stride, shocked.

“Wow,” he breathed after a long moment.

Sunshine turned her head, still craned skywards, to look over at him. "I know," she said, voice unaccustomedly, almost childishly delighted. "Amazing. It's been so long."

When she saw them next to the statue, with that box and the little droid (who she'd seen coming and going from the TARDIS from time to time), she knew.

That was the surprise, the one for everyone, that no one would see coming. She'd underestimated him. Again.

Damn.

She strolled up to the Time Lords and the droid, hands in pockets, a sweet, secret smile on her lips. There were things to say to both of them, each for his ears alone, and that would simply have to wait. For now, she simply said, "It's beautiful."

The Master's gaze drifted down to her after a moment. He wasn't smiling, but his eyes were sparkling.

Probably something to do with the projection and light refraction.

He didn't say a word. He was fairly sure he didn't have to.

Susan had gotten in the habit of not looking up at the night sky, there not being anything to see. Why, exactly, she happened to glace upward just then, she wasn't sure, but when she did, she stopped in her tracks.

And after a few moments of breathless wonder, she hurried to the opera house and burst in. "John! You must see this."

[identity profile] john-adams-1776.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
John glanced up in surprise. He was half to his feet before he realized she didn't sound alarmed, but pleased. Taking her hand, he asked, "What is it, Susan?"

[identity profile] sensiblesusan.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
She led him outside. "Look up."

Aziraphale was tired. He'd been pouring a lot of energy into a sizeable Christmas project of his own for days now, and wished to Somebody he could be certain he had his count of days right, but that was neither here nor there.

He walked out onto the club's balcony, as he'd been doing nightly before going to bed (necessary, at least for a few hours, or he'd never have mustered up the power for everything he'd been trying to do) just to get his bearings and get a feel for the park's general ambience...and immediately caught a surge of excitement and wonder drifting in from several directions at once.

Puzzled, he looked around the snow-powdered Square, saw a few people out and about and...looking up? He followed their gaze and...

"...Crowley," he called back into the building after a moment, blue eyes shining, "my dear, do come out and have a look at this."

Miracles were his stock in trade, and he was fairly certain this one must be technological or magical in origin. Still, he had to admit, he was impressed.

It took the demon quite a while to make his way out of the club, using the long neglected elevator rather than the stairs, but he eventually made his way to the door. If Aziraphale had called him down for something negligible, he was going to be sleeping in the stree...

Crowley mirrored the angel's posture and froze.

"I haven't... not for years..."

[identity profile] soho-angel.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"I know," Aziraphale said, almost whispering now so as not to break the spell. "Isn't it marvelous?" It really didn't matter how they'd got there nor whether they would be gone tomorrow, he thought. The expression on Crowley's face was a priceless gift in and of itself.

Katou often watched the stars at home. The fact that they weren't here had upset him quite a bit.

As he didn't sleep, he didn't miss the stars. He grinned to himself, and stared up at them.

"Yeah," said Katou, turning to Kira.

He looked up at the sky again, scanning for the familiar star, then shrugged. "We might need to wait for closer to morning," he said. "I think it's too late now." He looked back at the sky. "I'd ask if you wanted to stay up and watch for it, but you'd probably rather sleep, huh?"

Geordi had just grabbed some dinner (a hot dog and an apple) and was walking out when he saw the sky. He ran to the nearest bench, swallowed the hot dog in nearly one bite, and grabbed his tricorder. It looked a lot like the view from San Francisco, but he couldn't be sure ... Apple now residing in his mouth, he started pressing buttons.

Cayce pulled up short when she saw Geordi at work with the tricorder. "Hey there," she called out. "What's up?"

She hadn't actually looked up at the sky yet.

[identity profile] treknobabbler.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Worgh, mrmph!"

... Wait. Geordi was bad at talking to girls, but even he wasn't usually that bad. He removed the apple from his mouth and tried again. "Oh, hi! I'm trying to see if I can triangulate where we're positioned from the new astral projections, and if that matches anything else about our location."

Rukia had been perched in the tall tree in Critter Country. She'd been unable to sleep and naturally had sought the highest perch in the park from which to observe everything. That usually calmed her down, even if it didn't lull her off to dreamland. Tonight, though, when she saw the stars, she gasped, and almost fell out of the tree.

[identity profile] palletkid.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ash had been camped out nearby when he saw the stars appear a few minutes prior, and now he almost ran headlong into Rukia's tree.

"Hey, Rukia!" he shouted, waving frantically. "Look, stars! It's a Christmas miracle! Did you know sailors and Pokemon masters can travel by following the stars?" He pointed to a random star towards the east end of the park. "That's the north star and if I follow it I'll get to the north!"

Huh. Would you look at that. Phoenix had been heading back into his new...house, he guessed it could be called, when he happened to look up.

"Hey, Pearls! Come look at this!"

[identity profile] lil-channeler.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Looking up from her book, Pearl jumped up from the floor and hurried outside.

"What is it, Mr. Nick?"

[identity profile] creepyboy.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Tim was hanging out outside, since he still had issues with the sleeping when it was night time fairly often. Being rather observant, he noticed the stars had gone up almost immediately, and had an idea.

Sneaking into their...it still felt weird to consider it theirs...sleeping space he barked with full Robin-command tone. "Get up, it's time to train!"

[identity profile] hawaii-kid.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
That bark cut through even Kon's ability to sleep and he was upright beside the pile of pillows and blankets before he was even fully awake, trying to shake sleep out of his eyes as he looked for his team lead wildly. "Rob?!"
