There was an echo of familiarity there, things she'd talked about with the other, more lacunae in the stories.
The heat of the day notwithstanding, she felt a chill down her spine, and she wasn't entirely sure that she understood why. It left her at a sudden loss for words, though she didn't look away, nor did she release his hand.
"So is that how it fits together, then?" she said, after a silence. "Gamepieces for an entity grown weary of its own Universe, playing by rules to which we're not privy, for reasons intensely purposeful or entirely whimsical—or perhaps both?" She shifted her hold on his hand and brushed her thumb over his knuckles. "If your theory is correct, does that change anything?"
