1) Sam's dealing with another fictional character. A fictional villain from something science fiction.
2) He's a real alien. Sam believes in extra-terrestrial life the same way he believes in angels; with a kind of desperate hope supported by a logic which says they almost have to exist, even if he's never seen any real evidence of them.
3) The guy is bullshitting him. Sam discards this idea.
"Cool," he says after a moment. "I've never met an alien before. You come to Earth a lot? Real Earth, I mean."
