Oh, he was nothing if not manipulative. –and homicidal and cunning and always one step ahead– "But doing it for yourself didn't prove to be very rewarding, either way. Shame." Under all those layers there was frequently a real comment being made, but when someone fixed you with an expression that cartoonish it could be difficult to suss it out.
