“Oh,” Daniel says weakly, belatedly realizing what a can of worms he has opened. “Well… I mean, they’re not actually gods. They’re… well, aliens who came to Earth and pretended to be the gods that already existed in human…” he decides against ‘mythology’, feeling at this point that it would only exacerbate the problem at hand, “legend. Their advanced technology made the primitive people believe the lie.”

He shrugs. “I’ve never met any true gods.” This he can say with perfect honesty. “But there are a lot of things in the universe that I’ve never seen and that doesn’t mean they don’t exist, so…”

It’s a hard admission to make; when one has studied in depth most of human mythology it becomes difficult to believe in the stories, at least in the way in which they are intended to be believed. But Daniel reminds himself that he’s always had an open mind, and now is certainly not the time to get caught in the Gordian Knot of his own logic.

“You know, I always loved your story,” he admits softly, crossing his arms tightly over his chest. “My mom used to tell it to me when I was a kid.”

He’s feeling ever-so-slightly miffed that no one, in this reality or any other, ever understands his explanations. Maybe it’s the way he phrases things?
