Somewhere in Toon Town - Dusk

Elle was bored again. She hadn't seen Spike in ages, so she decided she was going to go look for him.

She was unaware of any imminent threat that might be lurking, despite Cayce's recent warning about someone looking for her.

"Basically the park won't let people die," Cayce put in. "Fall off a high place, and you'll float to the ground. And if you try to kill someone, you get chucked into a fountain. I know of at least one case with an actual witness."

"Huh. Any idea how close to fatal you can get before the defense system kicks in?"

After all, there was a lot of damage a person could do without killing them. Not to mention, Jenny needed to know for her own purposes if she even got in a fight.

"Close enough to cripple," Cayce said. "Although how I know that isn't really my story to tell."

"So enough that the wrong person can get up to plenty," Jenny said darkly. "Right. Obviously Zane's left the moat area. Any idea where he lives, or where he'd be headed?"

Cayce shook her head. "No idea, unfortunately. He seems to drift around."

"Well, it should be easy enough to find him," Katou said. "Wh -" and then he realized that neither Cayce nor Jenny would know what he feels like, so it wasn't going to be that easy.

"Well, shit," he muttered. "Scratch that."

"Well bugger," Jenny replied to Cayce. "Katou, how's your night vision? Can you take to the air, see if you can find the girl? She has a man with her, don't move in, get me first. It sounds like two against one is a better bet."

Katou didn't answer right away. He couldn't remember Elle's aura completely, but was sure that if he got wind of it, he'd recognize it. "It's okay," he said. "I'll see you ladies later." Then, he spread his wings again, took a couple of running steps, and then lept into the air. His beginning was a little shaky, but his got his balance back in no time.

Jenny watched Katou take off, and then turned to Cayce. "Let's try this on foot, then?" She paused, and then sent a few sparks of electricity into one of the nearby lamps. The glass shattered, but the sparks continued traveling down Main Street. "I'll see if I can find her myself," she added.

"Let's do it," Cayce said, with a confidence she almost felt.

And Jenny had been doing this for too long to be completely fooled by that. She took a last drag of her cigarette, dropped it on the ground (if the park was gonna clean up her mess anyway, why not?), and began walking towards Main Street purposefully. But she turned to Cayce, and said "I've fried superbastards a lot bigger than this one. Why'd he go after you in the first place?"

"Ah, heh." Cayce looked a little embarrassed. "Well, someone told him that I keep a record of everyone in the park, which I do, and I guess he wanted this girl's name and where she lived. Only he set off my creep alarms before I gave him the information. So he tried to scare it out of me, and when I tried to slow him down and get away, he, uh..." She shivered a little at remembered pain. "It didn't go well. Fortunately a—someone else happened along then and, I guess, smacked him down."

"Mmm," Jenny replied. It was obvious enough Cayce didn't want to say who delivered the aforementioned smack down, so she didn't ask. "Fucking bastard. Do anything else about it other than have your friend get him to fuck off? No one mentioned any protocol for what you do when you've got some bastard going about attacking women and generally being a pain in the arse. This a genuine bloody state of nature here or what?"

"Gave Elle a heads-up, among others. The problem is not causing panic or stirring up some kind of lynch mob while still making sure people are informed. The thing is ... we haven't really had people fucking around with other people like this." As far as Cayce knew, anyway. "There's a couple of iffy characters, but this guy is the first one to actually be dangerous. And no one really knows what to do." She sighed. "There was an attempt at starting some kind of police force, a while back. It met with pretty strong opposition; basically, folks were afraid it'd set up an abusable authority system."

"No arguments there," Jenny muttered, with a quirk of her lips. "Wouldn't trust most of the cops I've met to run things. I think what you did sounds about right," she said. "Lynch mob's no good, especially against someone with powers. Just ask because it makes me wonder who picks a fight with the bads who don't give off the creepy vibe. Sounds like you lot have been all right, though."

She shrugged, carefully glancing in the windows of the nearest shop, and keeping an eye out for movement.

"Funny you should mention abusable authority systems," she added conversationally. "That's what I did before I came here. Never thought I'd ever see a place that didn't have one. Other than hoarding the bloody booze systems."

"Sorting them out, you mean?" Cayce smirked. "Too bad you never made it to my Earth in 2004. Or maybe about a year and a half earlier."

"Sorted them out by being a bigger one," she replied honestly. It didn't exactly fit with a lot of her ideals to be starting up superteams with the power to take over the world, but there hadn't been a whole lot of choice. Stormwatch had been all right while it had lasted, but it hadn't been enough. "And the 21st century is a bit out of my jurisdiction, so do I want to know about this? The 90s were fucked up enough for me."

"Oh."

Awkward.

"The twenty-first century? Well, let's start out with a major act of terrorism on American soil, followed by an attempt to go after the people who organized it that pretty much failed, followed by a war that's got some pretty shaky justification. Oh, and the worst president in US history. Fun times."

If Jenny noticed any of the awkwardness, she didn't appear apologetic.

"Gore? He didn't seem too much worse than everyone else in Washington." She shrugged. "Better not've gone down like that in my world; I told those bastards."

Cayce started to laugh.

"Gore? If only. No, no, Bush won. Well. If 'recount stopped by order of the Supreme Court' counts as 'won'."

"Fuck, junior? You're joking. Heard he was thinking about running, but thought it was a great laugh." She shook her head. "All right, I was right, I didn't need to know."

"Yeah. Sorry about that." Cayce sighed.

She paused and cocked her head, listening for voices.

Katou swooped back, and landed beside them. "Found them." he said. "They're by the ice cream parlor."

"Good on you," Jenny said. "Sure it's them? Cayce, do you want to come to give a positive ID on Zane, or would you rather leave it to us?"

"I'm sure it's Elle, at least," Katou said. "I've never met Zane, so I'm not so sure about him."
