I'm afraid I understand quite well what you mean," she said with a wry, melancholy smile. "Jerry and Cathy and I ... we operate by very different rules. I suppose it's part of what we do and who we are—temporal adventurers, freelancers. I seem to have forgotten that I cannot apply those rules everywhere. And it makes me a bit useless in offering anything other than a sympathetic ear to others." She groaned a bit theatrically. "Men. Well, people in general, I suppose. But men in particular. Male beings. All that."
