Una tapped her nose and pointed at Starbuck in a got-it-in-one gesture. "You're sharp," she said appreciatively. "I'm not usually this foolish," she went on, and there was a little bit of a wail in her voice that would have surprised almost anyone who knew her—except possibly Catherine or Jerry. "It'd be all so much simpler if it were just a matter of bodies doing things. But then the intellect gets mixed up in it, especially when there's no other ulterior motives or anything to distract, and then everything else follows." She smiled, just a little sadly, and took another drink. "I don't know how I'm going to finesse it, frankly, but the worst part of it is, I think I'm enjoying it."

She blinked, surprised at her own frankness, and looked up at Starbuck with an unusually hapless expression. "My god, what you must think of me."
