Open RP -- Rukia skips rocks

Rukia didn't often go down to the river except when she needed to bathe, but today was an exception. The little shinigami was desperately bored, and she'd ultimately taken to skipping rocks on the water's surface, and watching the ducks scatter when one got too close (she actually tried not to aim for the ducks and for the most part she succeeded, but occasionally, one went astray).

What was frustrating was the way some rocks skipped gracefully across the water, some skipped one or two times and then stopped and some fell into the water with a plunk almost as soon as they left her hand. Rukia was sure there had to be a trick to it. She just wished she knew what...

((Anyone who wants to come talk to her, give her pointers, feed the ducks, etc., is welcome. :D))

"Not bad!" Lilly said with a huge smile. "The record's something like 40 or 41*, but that's just crazy."

Una had one up on Lilly, as she had never even heard Una's name. Still, she smiled and waved. "They're pretty good." She laughed sarcastically, "it's always a beautiful day in Creepy-Ass-Fake-Disneyland, after all."

Una chuckled. "I don't know about you, but I'd do almost anything for it to rain just once." She picked up a rock and tossed it from hand to hand before sending it out across the surface of the water, where it skipped four times before sinking with a plunk. "Where are my manners? I'm Una Persson."

Encouraged by Lilly's smile, Rukia bounced a little. Upon being told the record was 40 skips, she frowned a little. It did sound pretty crazy. "I don't think I'll try to get that good," she said sensibly. "It seems like a lot of time and effort for something that's ultimately a pointless diversion."

Rukia's first instict was to bow when she introduced herself, but Una looked like a Westerner, so she curtsied instead. "Nice to meet you, Una," said Rukia. "I'm Rukia Kuchiki, and this is... this is..."

Only then did she realize she didn't know Lilly's name.

"Lilly Kane." Lilly skipped the curtsy, but she did offer a friendly smile.

"A pleasure to meet you both. Been needing to get out and meet more people here, really."

A quartet of ducks flew down and settled on the water a short distance away. "I suppose it would be rude of me to aim for the ducks, wouldn't it."

"A pleasure to meet you too." Rukia looked like her own feathers had been a little ruffled when Una suggested aiming for the ducks. "I would think so," she said. "Personally, I find them rather cute."

"And they are completely inoffensive," Una said. It hadn't really been a serious suggestion anyway. "Have either of you noticed if there's any other wildlife here?"

((AFK for ... well, a while. Feel free to chat between yourselves and just assume Una is listening interestedly. ^_^))

Lilly shook her head. "I've never seen anything. Not even, like, ants or flies. It's creepy."

"Neither have I," Rukia admitted. "The only animals I've ever seen have been the ducks." Briefly, she looked thoughtful. "Are ducks this plentiful at the real Disneyland? I've never been."

Lilly nodded. "There are more than a few. But you don't really notice them as much, since there are squirrels and bugs, and other things, too."

Rukia nodded. "So why would the ducks stay and not the other animals?" she wondered. She had a thought, and started to say, "You know..." but finishing the sentence creeped her out, so she stopped.

"No, come on," Lilly said, never one to leave things alone. "What?"

Rukia knew Lilly had not been at the town meeting, although she wasn't sure if that was because Lilly wasn't interested in that sort of thing or because she hadn't been in the park at the time.

"There was a town meeting a month or so back" -- or so Rukia estimated anyway; keeping track of time in this place was difficult -- "and we were voting on whether or not we should have a police force. And one of the men arguing in favor of the police force, a tall blond guy named Leon, said that he suspected people who disappeared were actually turning into ducks."

Lilly made a face at that suggestion. A face that seemed to suggest extreme disbelief. "And how would this Leon guy have come to that conclusion anyway? What, did he, like, count all the ducks and all the people every day? And if he did, that then raises the question of why?"

"I'm not entirely sure," Rukia admitted ruefully. She found the theory a bit farfetched herself, and was pretty sure she didn't think that was really what was happening. (She would have been absolutely sure, but that she'd accepted since coming to Disneyland she couldn't be absolutely sure of anything regarding the mysterious inner workings of the park.)

"What I got out of it," she told Lilly, "was that he was investigating the disappearances in an attempt to find a way to get out, and in the process, somehow came to the conclusion that everyone who had vanished was turning into ducks."

"So what you're saying," said Lilly, suppressing a laugh. "Is that every so often people just vanish?" She couldn't hold it back anymore and let out a small laugh. "And the current running theory is that they turn into ducks?"

Una had been listening to the conversation with interest and some amusement. She picked up a stone and slung it out across the water for seven skips.

"Considering we've got a Greek goddess walking around here, I wouldn't write anything off as completely impossible," she observed mildly.

"That," Rukia said to Lilly in a very dry tone of voice, "is precisely what I'm saying."

She turned to Una and nodded a little. "It's possible," she conceded. "Around here, anything's possible. The real question is, is it likely?"

"Absent any proof one way or the other, it seems to me that any option is equally likely," Una said. "They could be turning into ducks. They could simply be going back to wherever they came from, picking up where they left off. Or they could be simply vanishing into thin air. Without further evidence, we can't do more than speculate."

"That's true," Rukia confessed. She bit down on her lip. "What do you make of th reappeances?" She was asking both of them, and indicated it by glancing back and forth between Una and Lilly.

"Reappearances? I've only just recently gotten my head around the disappearances; I wasn't aware that there were reappearances."

"I on the other hand didn't even know there were disappearances," Lilly said.

((Onf. I'm so sorry. Last final was today, and I have a sneaking suspicion I didn't do well, so spent the majority of the day simultaneously freaking out and celebrating))

"I see. I do hate to be the bearer of..." Rukia paused. Was this good or bad news? She went with, "...confusing news. But there have been disappearances for a while. And recently, people have started reappearing as well. As far as I know, always by the moat."

((*hugs!* Maybe you did better than you thought? D: Congrats on finals being over, though!))

Lilly took a few seconds to think about this and then asked, "do any of the reappearing people remember disappearing?"

((I ended up getting an 81% on the final which is all right, I guess, even though it dropped my final percent by about three or four points. To a 96%. I'm such a worrier over nothing. XD))

"You mean, of what it was like when they disappeared?" Rukia asked. She shook her head. "To the best of my knowledge, no."

((Awww! Sorry about the final. At least 96% is still an A? XD And er, sorry I took so long replying. >< LJ decided to quit emailing me and I forgot to check forever...))
