...a demon was trying, with the assistance of large quantities of alcohol, to ignore the sounds of park-wide destruction that might or might not mean the end of their sojourn in this place; and an angel was humoring said demon as best he could, despite his own none-too-cleverly-hidden hope that it would in fact mean that very thing. Not being particularly destructive by nature, and having little in the way of applicable skills he was willing to reveal to the park at large, Aziraphale had decided it would be best to stay out of the way unless called upon.

The atmosphere fostered by this dichotomy was not, to say the least, a terribly congenial one (especially since, as he understood it, two people rather near and dear to Crowley were directly involved in the effort.) Aziraphale dealt with it by burying his nose in a book, matching the demon teacup for brandy glass...right up until, moments after a series of particularly un-ignorable explosions and crashes were heard, Club 33's lights went out.

"Well, drat," he sighed, looking out through the 'rain'-spattered windows at the dimmed street. "I wonder if the entire place has lost power..."

Crowley gave him a who-gives-a-damn look over his sunglasses and waved the lights back on. His next pour was a triple and by then, three-quarters of the bottle was gone...

"Why the fuck would I want to talk about it, angel?" retorted Crowley vehemently.

"Just because at any moment they might sssucceed at getting us kicked back to London where I can't work for fear of the brat and I can't not for fear of his father, where the fucking Sword of Damocles is hanging over my head in terms of whether I'm even going to be allowed to continue to exissst or not, and where no one would give a flying fuck if I didn't except for someone who's not even allowed to admit it; why the FUCK would I want to talk about it?"

His vocabulary was slowly decreasing along with the amber liquid in the bottle.

Although Crowley was, at most times, very attractive and put-together, when he was drunk and his oldest friend in the universe was telling him that he was important to him, his face took on an unflattering, open-mouthed, fishy gape, like words were trying to come out, but they hadn't visited his brain yet.

Unable to bear the terrible frankness in Aziraphale's eyes, the demon turned his head away, feeling both impossibly blessed and doubly-damned. Really... What could he possibly say to that?

After a long, terrible silence though, a tiny sound was heard in the room. It was something like a stifled snigger, which devolved into something else. In response to all the tension, and most of the bottle of brandy, Crowley was giggling.

"What are you going to do, angel?" he finally asked, gasping for breath. "Bore the Morningssstar to death? Give lectures on printing errors in Bibles and Regency silver snuffboxes until he begsss for mercy? Hey, maybe then they'll give you your sword back!"

That just made the demon laugh harder.

When he was able to regain some control, Crowley sobered up slightly1 and made an incomprehensible gesture with his hand. "I, uh... 'preciate it, you know..." Although that apparently didn't mean he was looking anywhere near the angel.

1. Both in terms of emotional state and alcohol content.

Crowley actually had enjoyed all the sun, although rain was nice on occasion, but flying... He desperately missed flying. All Aziraphale got for his trouble, though, was a look that was disdainful even through sunglasses. "'Course I remember. I'm drunk, not ssenile."

Still, two whole years they'd been there - give or take. It was nothing to their kind, of course, but the demon couldn't remember another two years in all his long life where so much had changed and yet not.

"Yeah, we always do. 'ss not like we have a choice," muttered the demon.

When Aziraphale kissed his head, he glanced up sharply, looking for all the world like some kind of small, haunted prey animal. But in an instant the expression was gone, replaced by a studied air of world-weary ennui.

"Whatever you want, angel..."

Crowley smelled it long before Aziraphale had made it to the dining room, of course, but the only thought he'd admit to having was, Bastard. The angel knew him too bloody well if he remembered his true comfort food. No one had made goat like that - at least not in the Western world - for about four thousand years.

He finished off the bottle of brandy.

The demon knew exactly what Aziraphale was doing. And frankly, it pissed him off. He had every right to his feelings even if it made other people uncomfortable.

It did smell damn good, though...

The lights were out, the rides had stopped, the PA system was silent and Aeryn had taken off to join the group at the door. Ellie was left to her own devices, but she didn't stand around long wondering what to do with herself.

She left her axe embedded in a support column at the Chalet and headed for New Orleans Square at a run, flitting past darkened storefronts and idle mechanical figures almost too quickly for the eye to follow. She neither slowed nor spared a glance as she passed the castle. The people below had made their choice, and she had made hers.

Cayce, half-blind from crying and lost in thought, completely failed to see that she was on a direct collision course with Ellie.

"WHOA!" The succubus caught sight of Cayce just in time to put on the brakes, and collided relatively harmlessly, catching hold of the other woman so that neither of them would fall. "Shit, I'm sorry, honey. Are you okay?"

"Ellie." Cayce dragged her arm across her face and amanged a very poor smile. "Yeah. No. I ..." Deep breath. "Maybe I should start at the beginning." She looked around. "Looks like you guys did a heck of a job up here."

Ellie shrugged, 'finding' a tissue and giving it to her. "I can only claim credit for the cable cars. What's the matter? Did something go wrong?"

caycep: (Thoughtful)
From: [personal profile] caycep
"Well..." Cayce wiped her nose with the tissue. "Depends on what you mean by 'wrong'. Whatever happened up here, it worked -- we were able to break through and open a hole in the door." She sighed. "I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to people quite so soon."

"Oh." Ellie's gaze dropped, then halted and came back up. "Well...what's on the other side? Where does it lead?"

"Home," Cayce said simply. "It leads home."

"I see." Ellie folded her arms, swallowing a knee-jerk denial that would probably only distress the woman. The issues she had with going back to her own home world were hardly Cayce's fault. "So I guess...this is it then, huh?"

"It's ... it's something," Cayce said. "Kira and Setsuna have gone*; Psyche led them through. I ... I had to come back. Have to let everyone know. It's what I do, after all." She shrugged wryly. "And I need to say goodbye to people."

She glanced around. "Are you ... you're not heading to New Orleans Square, by any chance, are you?"

"Oh, god, yeah, I am, I am." Cayce's voice caught a little. "I just ..." She shook her head. "I'd go now, except someone's got to get the word around. Could you -- could you tell him I'll be there soon? Ish?" she added hastily, not wanting to get in the way of ... whatever Ellie had in mind. "I'm not going anywhere until I've had a chance to say -- to talk to him."
